Suspended vehicles are those that do not exceed 5000 miles (7500 for agricultural vehicles) and are exempt from the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax. Failure to file the return will result in a penalty of 4.5% of the amount due, plus an additional 0.54 cents for each mile over the 5,000 mile limit that the vehicle was used for. When filing the return, you will be required to pay the tax amount due and the penalties. Form 2290 proof of payment is a document showing proof that you have paid your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax for the given tax period. Schedule 1 is proof of payment. This document is an important part of your filing and you must keep a copy of the Schedule 1 with your trucking records.
